Career Overview
2016 – Present; Project Development- Two High end Units at Coolum, Queensland
In 2015 I submitted a Development Application under the superseded planning scheme with the Sunshine Coast Regional Council to convert my existing dwelling in Coolum into two high end units. This required design development, planning, operational works, building approval and financing prior to approval in August 2016 commencement in May 2017. Unit 1 sold in Dec 2018.
Unit 2 is complete and just entered the market for sale. The project comprises the conversion of our existing house into 2 x 3 storey dwellings. Given the significant ocean views and associated exposure to the high winds and steepness of the terrain, the structural design was significant, including a suspended concrete driveway to unit 2. 3D architectural renders were prepared to assist all stakeholders to understand the development and assist with taking the project to the market.

2013 – 2015; Consulting to Rio Tinto Australia (RTA)- Weipa Community
Client side management of infrastructure design and delivery through gated financial models for infrastructure, particularly water and sewer projects for their township of Weipa. The township is owned and operated by RTA with approximately 5000 residents. My role was to consult to and engage with external consultants and internal managers to prepare concepts, budgets and designs for the delivery of critical township infrastructure as part of RTA’s risk minimisation strategy.

2011 – 2013: Independent Engineering and Project Management Consultant
Sunshine Coast (1.5 years)
Project Bid for the Horton Park Golf Course (HPGC)
The Sunshine Coast Regional Council entered negotiations to purchase/ resume the HPGC to make way for Council’s proposed Principal Activity Centre . I sourced and evaluated a new golf course site to offer the members an alternative to Council’s options resume their golf course, buy the Twin waters Golf Club and amalgamate the two club memberships.
This involved co-ordinating consultants to carry out site investigations (hydraulic and geotechnical) reports, course design option with Graham Marsh and develop the project feasibilities.
I also lobbied Council and in particular the mayor Bob Abbott to support the Club in their quest to find a suitable site for a new course. These negotiations were successful and the club were able to renegotiate the terms of the Council resumption of their property. A new course was constructed north of the Maroochy River.

1999 – 2010: Infrastructure Development Manager Lend Lease Development (LLD), Brisbane
and Sunshine Coast (12 years)

2009 – 2010: Infrastructure Development Manager – RNA (due diligence phase -18 months).
Whilst still based on the Sunshine Coast, I commuted to LLD’s Brisbane office to carry out the Due Diligence phase of the proposed $3.0 billion Royal National Association (RNA) site redevelopment project in Brisbane’s CBD. During this period I managed external consultants and identified a total of $80m of infrastructure instead of the $20m allocated in the Bid Phase whilst assisting the development team in successfully negotiating acceptable solutions for infrastructure delivery with BCC and the State Government’s ULDA. This included identifying and costing solutions for containment and management of contaminated soils (PCB’s, fly ash fill from the cities old power station, petrol and oil spills from years of operating a speedway on the main oval), relocation of some of Brisbane’s largest and oldest 110 KV U/G HV cables, finding stormwater solutions for the project (including preservation of the Water Street historic stormwater tunnels), identifying solutions for stormwater detention and management by the introduction of large underground detention tanks to ensure no worsening of Brisbane’s inner city/ Valley downstream stormwater problems.
In October 2010 LLD signed a JV with the RNA to proceed but unfortunately I was unable to relocate back to Brisbane as my wife and I didn’t want to realise the substantial post GFC loss we would have incurred in selling the house we purchased in Coolum 3 months before the GFC.
Equally, LLD insisting we relocate back to Brisbane so I could manage all infrastructure on the RNA. With LLD having divested all their interests on the Sunshine Coast I was left with no alternative but to leave with a view to selling our home when the market improved and relocating back to Brisbane to continue my career in project development some time later.

2005 – 2009: Senior Development Manager- Hyatt Regency Coolum (Sunshine Coast)
Residing in Brisbane and operating out of Lend Lease’s Brisbane head office, I was responsible for managing the civil aspects associated with the preparation and submission of the master plan for the $100m resort redevelopment. Responsibilities included identifying and preparing budgets, technical reports for the master plan submission including the refurbishment of the Robert Trent Jones 18 hole championship golf course. Through innovative ideas I managed to identify and substantiate both flooding and environmental concerns to enable the RTJ golf course to be re-aligned. This idea freed the beachside component of project of 5 golf fairways. The masterplan was amended accordingly and improved the projects commercial assessment by $10m.

Following the team’s success in obtaining the masterplan approval for the HRC in mid 2007, LLD requested I take up an SDM role on their Rocky Springs project in Townsville, however that project unfortunately got delayed due to the identification of black throat-ed finch on the proposed site, which necessitated a 2 year Commonwealth EIS process. Subsequently, LLD requested
I move my family to the Sunshine Coast to delver the golf and residential developments on the HRC.

We sold our home in Indooroopilly and moved to Coolum close to the HRC whereupon I managed the design, approvals, tender, quality control and construction management including OH&S for civil, environmental, geological, hydraulic and landscape elements of the project.
I also assisted the sales and marketing team through the difficult stakeholder management phases of the masterplan approval and subsequently supported them to deliver the project to the market.
Post GFC, Lend Lease sold the resort to Clive Palmer and the beachside development to Sekesui House. They also sold out their remaining development interests within the Sunshine Coast.
I had a pivotal role in assisting Lend Lease Development sell their interests in Twin Waters West project to Stockland through identification of hydraulic engineering solutions that prevented the demise of the $100m project when the SCRC rejected the Stockland / LLD JV masterplan submission on the basis of the proposal’s impact on river flooding.

1999 – 2004: Construction Manager Infrastructure, North Lakes.
A Lend Lease Development joint venture with Lensworth, a $300m Integrated Residential Project. Responsibilities included managing all aspects of OH&S, workplace bargaining agreements with the Construction, Forestry, Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU), tendering, contract award and contract administration for bulk earthworks, lake construction, residential stages, major road and all associated infrastructure amounting to approximately $40m.

2003 – 2004: Golf Project Manager
In addition to the North Lakes Construction Manager role above, Iwas responsible for the design and delivery of the championship 18 hole golf course and clubhouse, including assisting the director in negotiating the sale agreement with Clubcorp for the course as a turnkey project.

1997 – 1998: Design Coordination Project Leader
Civil project leader for design co-ordination and contract administration of approximately $40m within the $360m Greg Norman’s signature golf course ‘The Glades’ and high density integrated residential estate at Robina, Gold Coast and three stages of Lend Lease’s ‘The Anchorage’, a high density waterfront residential estate at Tweed Heads.

1997: Senior Engineer and Project Manager
Design Verification and Superintendent Technical Support
Design coordination (part) and design verification for a $15m marina reconstruction at Sentosa Island, Singapore for the Sentosa Development Corporation (Singapore Government) including technical support for the Superintendent (our Singaporean joint venture partners) which includes
numerous site inspections to ensure design intent was achieved.

1995 – 1996: Senior Engineer and Project Manager
Contract Administration of Stage 3A ‘Sovereign Islands’, a $10m stage of the residential canal development within Moreton Bay for Lewis Land Corporation.

1994 – 1995: Project Management and Design Coordination
Expatriated to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as part of a 3 person project management team on the ‘The Mines Resort’, a $150 million golf and residential resort development. Responsibilities included the management of the design consultancy teams both in Malaysia and Australia to design and document a 1,000,000 sq ft shopping centre / canal / lock and waterfront residential housing as well as construction management of the on-site civil works. Valuable experience was gained in working cross culturally which improved skills in effective communication, cultural respect, dealing with authorities and government agencies with associated cultural differences in operation and time management and language. Experience was also gained working with interpreters.

1993 – 1994: Design Project Management
Design and analysis of bulk earthworks for ‘Lakewoods’, a residential estate at Palm Beach, Gold Coast, for HSP Property Group. Acid sulphate soils management, control of floodwater impacts, tidal control of lakes and water quality controls set down by the EPA were the predominant engineering issues confronting this development.

1991 – 1992: Contract Administration and Project Coordination
Design co-ordination and site management of the Palm Beach Golf Resort, a 250 ha residential development, incorporating a Palmer signature golf course, duplex housing and townhouses; 430 building lots in total. My responsibilities included the full design and documentation of the engineering drawings for golf course bulk earthworks, flood study, residential estates, clubhouse bulk earthworks and return effluent irrigation main. Experience was gained supervising the bulk earthworks construction within a floodplain during significant rainfall events particularly associated with sediment and erosion control measures.

1990 – 1991: Building Construction – contractor and designer
Constructed a $2 million restaurant for Elgin Kischak at Booval, Ipswich. Constructed $1.4m house at Mt Tamborine including all civil and architectural designs and detailing.

1987 – 1998: Design and Contract Administration
Civil design and contract administration for the following projects:
Sovereign Islands, Stages 2 and 3, a waterfront residential subdivision developed – Moreton Bay.
Portmerrion Marina, a 100m x 4.0m reinforced concrete and rock revetment seawall and associated dredging works, piling and installation of floating marina berths.
Grand Marina seawall, a 100m x 3.5m high reinforced concrete structure and associated dredging, piling and installation of floating marina berths.
Sanctuary Cove, an Integrated Resort Development, Phase I including all the residential subdivisions, trunk drainage sewers, many kilometres of clay paved roads and canal No. 3 (excluding marine village and harbours 1 and 2).

1987 – 1998: Contract Administration
During this period, carried out contract administration for the following:
Hope Island resort, Phase 1, assisted the Project Leader with the contract administration of the first stage of the development under the guidelines of the Queensland Government’s ‘Integrated Resort Development Act’. The administration of the project proved to be complex due to two flood inundations during construction and administering the associated insurance complexities.
Robina Woods and Kerrydale Estates for Robina Land Corporation. Contract administration of thirteen stages (650 lots) including associated trunk sewers and arterial roads constructed within thirteen months.
Bulk earthworks for Robina Golf Club (18 holes), contract administration of golf course construction incorporating lake excavation stormwater drainage and bulk earthworks over poor marine clay deposits (fine finishing, course irrigation and green construction by others).
